We provide support for children and young people with sensory impairments, like a hearing impairment, a visual impairment or a multi-sensory impairment.
We are a joint authority funded service that works across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset. We aim to promote the achievement, inclusion, well being and quality of life of children and young people with a sensory impairment.
This service is currently under review by the joint funding local authorities. For further details of this review please click New Service Joint Public Statement In the meantime, this service remains as follows:
What is a sensory impairment?
A sensory impairment could be
- a vision impairment,
- a hearing impairment, or
- a multi-sensory impairment
These impairments are 'low incidence disabilities'. This means that less than 1% of the students at school age will have one of these impairments and the necessary knowledge and experience to support these impairments is not widely available in every educational setting. The service starts supporting children right from birth (soon after diagnosis) by supporting their parents and carers. To make sure children and young people with sensory impairment receive good quality education the Sensory Support Service works with educational settings, including teaching specialist skills such as braille, BSL, ndependence and social skills. Our aim is that children and young people with sensory impairments have the best opportunities in life to thrive, succeed, reach their aspirations and have the best possible quality of life.
